Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Tourism will be discussed at CATIE
- More than 50 people from the Future Without Poverty – Global Summit will gather at the Center to hold their annual summit
October 2nd, 2017. CATIE (The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) will host The Future Without Poverty (FWOP) World Summit in Costa Rica from October 4 to 6.
This event will bring together representatives from universities, non-government organizations, governments, businesses, and individuals to discuss solutions to the challenges that poverty brings to individuals and communities around the world.
The International Master in Sustainable Tourism (MIST) offered jointly by CATIE and the University of North Texas is part of the global network of the FWOP organization, which is why its annual meeting will be held in Turrialba, Costa Rica.
Prior to this event, FWOP and CATIE agreed to establish an initiative linking sustainable tourism and poverty reduction. Eliécer Vargas, MIST coordinator, commented that the FWOP World Summit will be a great opportunity for the FWOP Global Network and all stakeholders to assess challenges, identify opportunities to continue expanding the actions to implement the goal of a future without poverty. “Through the summit, we will be able to strengthen partnerships to advance the implementation of the solutions to reduce poverty one person at a time” said Vargas.
The summit will be inaugurated by Muhammad Ibrahim, Director General of CATIE and by Sylvester Flores, founder and president of FWOP and will include meetings, keynote speeches, knowledge exchange spaces and field trips to learn about rural tourism experiences and livestock production in a small scale and analyze the challenges of using technologies, support systems and empowerment strategies in communities.
